The Fire Engineering or Engineering for the Protection Against Fires is the application of the principles of the Science and the Engineering to the protection of the persons, of the goods and of the environment from the destructive effects of Fire. It presents applications in fields as diverse as the construction – of both building and infrastructures-, the transport of passengers and of goods, the industries and the manufacturing processes, the storage of raw materials or final products.

 

The application of the Fire Engineering includes both the project and the review of passive and active protection systems against fires, the risk evaluation, the production of egress, self-protection and emergency plans, the design of vehicles or the selection, test and homologation of materials and products.

 

Ignia’s Fire Engineers take responsibility for the analysis, design and in-site implantation of the fire safety within four huge areas of activity:

 

Fire Development Analysis (CFD)


The fire dynamics is the study of the diverse factors that influence the development and behaviour of a fire. The NFPA defines it as "the detailed study of how the chemistry, the fire science and the engineering of the mechanics of fluids and of the heat transfer interact to influence the behaviour of the fire". The Fire Dynamics, especially in its most advanced computational approach (Computational Fluids Dynamics or CFD) is capable of evaluating the real risk that exists in a certain establishment, infrastructure, industry or storage and to determine its own fire curve adjusted to its reality without needing to apply standardized fire curves not in harmony to the analyzed case which will result in extra charges for its excessive conservatism and in an ignorance of the real risk.

Fire Development Analysis (CFD)

Ignia is one of the few companies in Spain that couple the modeling of the evacuation with the CFD modeling of the fire in an unique computational environment, contributing a new added value when compared to the independent analyses.

Egress Analysis

Projects and Construction Management of Industrial and Civil Facilities


The integration in Europe carries the immersion in a regulation concerning the design, calculation and execution of structures unknown for the majority of the professionals and far away in some of its approaches from the current one, which shows the effects of not being updated and according to the technical advances.
In Ignia we departed from the application of the current regulation to the project of constructions such as industrial buildings, self-supported stores and other singular elements of the civil engineering as shipment fingers for planes, to manage to approach in depth the technical bases that separate the new European regulations from the current Spanish regulation, as well as the aspects of its practical application. Thus, currently we are at an unimprovable position to develop projects fulfilling both sets of regulations.
Additional tasks as a consultant and reviewer of technical software addressed to the calculation of structures of prestigious Spanish and international companies, accompanied by the doctorate in structural analysis of Ignia's Director and more than twenty years of experience, support Ignia's capacitation for industrial and civil works project.

Calculation of Industrial, Building and singular Structures


In Ignia we develop the calculation of structures both as an integrated service in the projects of construction and in an independent form, in conformity with the Spanish regulation and to the European codes, constituting a valuable technological support for construction companies, engineering and architecture bureaus for the building project of high-rise buildings, singular buildings or infrastructures.
With this purpose, in Ignia we have wide-scope and advanced software for the calculation of structures permanently updated and by means of which we can calculate and size the most varied structural typologies:
• Steel and aluminium structures submitted both to any classical typology of loads resulting from combinations of their own weight, overloads, wind action, the earthquake and the snow, and to the most complex such as the termomechanics - in case of fire or induced by industrial processes-.
• Structures of reinforced concrete and mixed structures. In case of high resistance concretes in high-rise buildings or rail tunnels, in Ignia we are even in disposition to analyze the behaviour of concrete under fire conditions by means of its thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanic analysis which allows to study phenomena of high complexity as the spalling not correctly addressed in the regulations.
• Superficial and deep foundations of reinforced concrete.
• In Ignia we have specific software for the production of the state of measurements and budget of each of the above mentioned structural typologies. The accomplishment of the calculations of structures integrates an advanced system of quality control of the adopted solutions, on the basis of analytical additional evaluations of the basic parameters that define the structure.

Project and Construction Management of Installations, Industries and Urban Infrastructures


In Ignia we develop the calculation, design and checking of all kinds of installations. Among the installations designed there are included facilities of electrification (low, average and high tension and public system of illumination), of gas and water supply, of health (sewer, depuration, smokes and ventilation), of transport (elevators and moving belts), of refrigerating facilities and of protection against the fire. All this is accomplished across analytical evaluations according to the established in the corresponding codes and regulations. In addition, in case of the design of networks for the electrical supply, the supply of water, the sewer and the reparation and gas supply, we arrange advanced software of calculation that allow the dimensionning of either meshed, branched out or mixed networks, constituting a valuable help for the design of urban infrastructures and of huge establishments.

Projects for the activity license of Industries, Commercial Premises and Establishments


In Ignia we develop projects for the activity license of industries, commerical premises and establishments of very different nature, being one of our final purposes the attainment of the corresponding opening authorizations of the activity.
The projects of activities developed are ruled by the general and sectorial regulations, laws and current codes in subjects such as Waters, Nourishment, Elevators, Heating and air conditioning, gaseous Fuels, Communications, Construction, Pollution and environment healthy, Electricity, alternative Energies, Hydrocarbons and liquid fuels, Industries in general, Protection against fires, Containers under pressure and storage of chemical products, Refrigeration and industrial cold, Safety and hygiene, Workshops, vehicles, I.T.V. and garages, Transport, Urbanism or Uses and activities among others.
Likewise, once finished the works necessary for the installations that the activity needs, in Ignia we provide the works final certificate.

Coordination of Safety and Health in works of construction


During the development of the project of any work of construction in which several designers participate, the promoter will have to designate a coordinator for safety and health during the project phase of work. Likewise, when in the execution of the work more than one company intervenes, or a company and autonomous workers or diverse autonomous workers, the promoter will designate a coordinator for safety and health during the execution of the work.
The Project engineers of Ignia are credited by the Works Inspection Authorities as Technical personnel in Prevention of Labour Risks, being in an ideal position to act as Coordinator of Safety and Health in works of construction, as well as to develop Basic and Complete Studies of Safety and Health and to advise the building firms and subcontractors in the confection of their Plans of Security and Health.

Peer Review, Expert Reports and Technical Advisory in Judicial and Administrative matters


Arising from a wide experience having developed the Peer Review of more than 3.000 projects, calculations and designs done by other professionals, the Project Engineers of Ignia are qualified to provide technical reports, expert reports and to act as Peer Reviewers in the frame of private, public, judicial or administrative matters.

IGNIA was founded in 1.999 from the hand of the Doctor in Industrial Engineering Angel Guerrero Castells focused initially on the development of Projects, Calculations and Engineering Developments in a normative frame of prescriptive character.

In order to take advantage of the flexibility added by the PBD (Performance Based Design) to the architectural design and of installations without a reduction of the safety level, in IGNIA we decided to turn in 2.004 into one of the first and scanty Companies in Spain in restating our managerial philosophy and to adapt to give content to the new Performance Based approach to design works, experiencing a process of continuous adjustment and qualification in order to offer a new set of services of higher added value and quality completely updated and focused on the binomial Safety + Economy.
